Harry Owen was born in Manchester, England in July 1905 and was the youngest of ten children. Harry and his family emigrated to Australia in 1913 and settled in the Sydney suburb of Burwood. They named their house in Burwood, “Moston” after the street in which they lived in Manchester.
Harry appeared to have settled into the new country fairly well and took to the game of rugby league. He retained his English accent in those early years and picked up the nick name of “Pommy.” Harry Owen was first recorded playing with the Concord Juniors Rugby League B Grade team in 1924 and made the Wests President’s Cup squad that year, although he was listed as W. Owens.
