Edward “Ed” Courtney junior was introduced to Wests when his father brought him to training in the pre-season of 1923.
Young Ed played for Sargents in the City Business Houses competition that year but he had the experience of playing one Reserve Grade game with Wests. He was seventeen years of age at the time.
There was great expectation on young Courtney as his father was one of the doyens of the early game. Ed famously made his First Grade debut with Wests on 14 June 1924 alongside his father Tedda Courtney senior.
It was Tedda’s last season of a long career which dated back to the foundation year of rugby league.
The two Courtneys played two First Grade games together in 1924. The first game was Ed Courtney junior’s debut in First Grade and the second was Tedda Courtney senior’s last game in First Grade.
