Alan Ridley first came to prominence as an eighteen year old playing for the Queanbeyan Rugby League team in 1929. He rapidly went from club football to being selected for the Group 8 and Southern Districts representative teams. Within weeks he was playing for Combined Country, But that was only the start of a great rugby league career.
The Referee newspaper on 29 May 1929 printed the following article about Alan Ridley:
“Manager Alfred Bowers is particularly proud of Alan Ridley. A brother of the well known tennis family (Harry, Norman and Dick) of Queanbeyan, he weighs 13.8, he can run 100 yards in even time. It was no mean performance in his first entry into big football to earn selection in the strong Southern team, and then Combined Country.”
