Peter Walsh grew up in the western Sydney suburb of Regents Park. He first played rugby league with the Regents Park U/7’s in the Canterbury Bankstown junior rugby league competition. By 1965 many of the Regents Park players moved across to the newly formed Berala Bears club in Wests territory. Berala became the source of many fine footballers that went on to play grade with Wests. One of those players was Peter’s older brother, Gary Walsh.
Peter was graded with Wests in 1975 and was with the club for six seasons. This was a period when Wests had considerable success but competition for a halves position in the top team was intense. Names such as Raudonikis, Lamb, Neil, Rowles and Heyward to name but a few went on to achieve the highest honours.
Given Peter’s limited opportunities in Wests First Grade team, it would be easy to underestimate his contribution to the game as a player and coach. However, those that have had the experience of playing with him or being mentored by him only have the highest praise.
Former First Grade player, Charlie Haggett, who coached alongside Peter in the early 2000’s noted the following about him;
“He saw things unfold in a game before they happened. His coaching techniques were sharp and to the point. No one left the field at training without knowing what they had to do for the next game. He is one of the real larrikins of rugby league, not in a bad way, but in a good way. He demonstrates what rugby league should be about, having fun but being serious at the right times. Players wanted to play in the teams he coached and when he played, players wanted to play with him. You can’t get much greater acknowledgement than that.”
The Peter Walsh Story
Twenty years after the famous Northern Blues premiership in 2005, the Port Stephens chapter of the Family of League thought it pertinent that Peter should be recognised for his immense contribution to the game of rugby league. Secretary Peter Arnold, suggested, that the Peter Walsh Story be told and published. Future generations should be aware of the valuable contribution ‘Spider’ has made to the game of rugby league.
