Mick Alchin was born in the south-west NSW town of Cootamundra in 1943. Cootamundra has a proud rugby league record in the Group Nine – Maher Cup competition. The town has produced many fine rugby league players including Mick Alchin.
Mick was educated at the Cootamundra De la Salle College which was also where he played rugby league at an early age.
In his teenage years, Mick relocated to the NSW city of Newcastle. He attended the Marist Brothers High School at Hamilton and also Cooks Hill High School. He played in the strong Newcastle rugby league competition before heading to Sydney where he joined Wests. Mick soon became one of the favourite players of Wests supporters with his strong and assertive style of play.
