Cyril Flint’s father immigrated to Australia in the mid 1880’s from Denmark. The family first settled in the mining town of Chillagoe, Queensland, west of Cairns, before moving south to Charters Towers where Cyril was born. The family moved to Sydney just before the First World War.

Cyril Flint learned his football at the Y.M.C.A Rugby Union Club in Sydney, coming through the junior ranks and ultimately playing for the First Grade team. At the Y.M.C.A. Rugby union Club Cyril Flint played alongside Arthur Toby, who was a Wallaby before he also went across to rugby league in 1926 to play for Easts and Balmain, and Edward “Ted” Greatorex who was also a Wallaby. Y.M.C.A. was one of the top rugby union clubs in Sydney during the 1920’s.
