Alan grew up in the Sydney suburb of Regents Park. He is the oldest of three brothers that all played rugby league with Wests. His brother Craig played with Wests between 1980 and 1986. The youngest brother, Michael, was with Wests between 1983 and 1986.
Their father Barry was a team manager with the local Berala club. He also was a Wests junior rugby league selector. Alan played his junior rugby league at school with St Benedicts and on the weekends with the Berala Bears.
Alan was graded in 1975 and played throughout the late 1970’s and into the mid 1980’s. Alan came to prominence in 1980 when Tom Raudonikis moved across to Newtown and made the halfback position his own.
