Steve was born at Camperdown in 1951 and grew up a few streets away in the inner Sydney suburb of Forest Lodge. He played his junior rugby league with the Glebe Police Boys Club in the Balmain district.
He also played rugby union for a number of years. In his junior years he was always at training or playing on weekends.
