Steve

Steve Winter was born in the NSW town of Tamworth and it was there that he learned to play rugby league. Tamworth has a long history of producing good rugby league players and Steve was no exception.

He was educated at Tamworth High School and in 1964 was a member of the school’s First XIII that won the University Shield. His contemporaries from those years who played First Grade include Graham Lisle and Michael Ross. Also, in the Tamworth team that year was Billy Henry, brother of former Wests player Darcy Henry.

Steve moved to Sydney where he worked in the public service with the Lands Department. After trialling with St George, Steve decided to make Wests his home between 1968 and 1972.

He later moved to Sydney’s north shore and played with North Sydney. Former Wests players Noel Kelly and John “Chow” Hayes had taken up coaching positions at Norths. He has remained in the northern Sydney area ever since.

Tony Lewis from Pratten Park Magpies interviewed Steve Winter in January 2025. Some of that information is included in this bio of Steve. For the full interview tap on the link to Pratten Park Magpies.
