Bob Hobbs was born in Ngāruawāhia, New Zealand just outside of Hamilton on the North Island. His family returned to Australia by 1930 and settled at Cowra in the central west of NSW.
During the Second World War Bob’s family moved to the western Sydney suburb of Fairfield. He was graded with Canterbury in 1945 and made his First Grade debut that year.
Bob played one season with Wests before moving on to Cootamundra where he captain-coached the successful Clayton Cup winning team.
Returning to Sydney, Bob joined the Parramatta Club and captained the team in his debut year. Bob was unfortunate as he was selected to play for NSW but his job as a Policeman caused him to withdraw. He missed his opportunity to go onto higher honours in rugby league as a result.
