Roy Liston was born at Newtown in 1896 but lived for much of his early life in the inner suburb of Leichhardt.

He played his junior rugby league in the Balmain district. He enlisted with the AIF in December 1916 for service in the First World War. Roy was posted to the 2nd Field Company Engineers and was given the rank of Driver. He embarked  for Europe in May 1917.

During the war, Roy spent much of his time in England. He was transferred to France in March 1918 and remained there until the armistice. On his return to England he was posted to Headquarters in London before returning to Australia in June 1919.
