Peter was born in the south western NSW town of Wagga Wagga in 1934. He is the son of a railway worker and during his youth the family moved to various country towns throughout NSW. During his teenage years, Peter’s family was living near Wollongong in the Illawarra.
He attended the Christian Brothers College, Wollongong but rugby league was not on his radar at that time. The sport of choice in those years was soccer in the winter and First Grade cricket in the summer.
In 1949, Peter came to Sydney and after a couple of years started playing rugby league along with his twin brother, Paul, who played one Third Grade game with Wests. Peter was selected in Wests Presidents Cup team in 1955 and was graded in the same year. He played four seasons with Wests as well as stints at Narrandera and Armidale.
Peter Hargreaves retired from rugby league at the end of 1960 and joined the NSW Police where he served for thirty three years.
