Max Caldwell was from the suburb of Concord and grew up in that neighbourhood. No information has been found as to where he played his junior rugby league. It is possible that it was one of the Concord teams that preceded Concord United.
In 1952, Max was graded with Wests. He was a big man who played mainly in the front row and was a regular in Third Grade in his first year. It was a premiership year for Wests and opportunities in the higher grades were limited but Max’s time would come.
