Leslie Byleveld was born in Maryborough, Queensland in 1885. He settled in the Ashfield area and at age seventeen played with the Summer Hill St Andrews Institute Rugby Union team in 1902.
The St Andrews Institute was a religious organisation that had an extensive program of sport and creative activities to support youth in the area.
Les Byleveld’s mother died in 1902, and his father died the following year. The Institute probably provided necessary support for a young Les Byleveld.
