The Glachan family were well known in the Sydney area in the inter-war period. John’s grandfather, J T Glachan headed up a variety troupe known as the Glachan Family Concert. The troupe which numbered up to fifteen players, entertained inmates of hospitals, prisons and other institutions.

John Glachan’s parents were originally from the Kogarah area but moved to the western Sydney suburb of Bass Hill. It was here that John spent his formative years.

By the mid 1960’s the Glachan family had moved to Budgewoi on the NSW Central Coast. John played rugby league with the nearby Wyong Kangaroos.
