John Walker grew up in the Waverley district in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. In summer, he was part of the surf culture and became an active member of the Bronte Surf Club. John was an accomplished water polo player, as well.

During the winter months, John played junior rugby league with the Charring Cross team. He was selected from there to play for Eastern Suburbs in the Presidents Cup competition in 1962 and was graded soon after.

In 1964 John was serving in the NSW Police Force and was transferred to the town of Queanbeyan. It was from this country centre that John made his mark in representative rugby league.

He returned to Sydney and apart from a short period with Wests has remained in the Eastern Suburbs locality.
