John was born at Ashfield, NSW in 1944. He was educated at Ashfield De La Salle College and graduated from the Ashfield Technical College in 1959.

He learned to play rugby league during his school years and joined the South Strathfield Club for the 1959 season. John went across to Enfield Federals the following year and played with Federals until 1963.
