Herbert Warby was reported in newspapers as both W. Warby and H. Warby. A time line of his football activity commenced at Granville, before he went to Parramatta and then ultimately to Wests.
It was evident that he resided in the Granville District but a check of records indicated that there was no W. Warby of the right age in this District. However, there was a Herbert W. Warby born at the right time and living in the Granville District.
Other records such as his participation in the local Billiards tournament also show the use of both the H. and W. initials. The weight of this information strongly indicated that Wests player #136 was Herbert William Warby.
Herbert William Warby is from an old Granville/Parramatta family. He attended the Granville Superior Public School and participated in various sporting activities. Herbert played in the Granville Royals Third Grade team with other future Wests First Grade players including Westley Easterbrook and Joe Lindsay.
A newspaper article in 1913 heralding Herbert Warby’s First Grade debut reported; “Warby, Parramatta District’s fine wing three quarter, will probably appear for Wests on August 16. He has shown good form right throughout the year.”
Herbert Warby lived all of his life at Granville, NSW and died there in May 1966.
