George Skeers was born in the south-west region of NSW in 1947. He was first recorded playing with the Gundagai Rugby League club in 1966 at the age of eighteen.
During the mid-1960’s a breakaway Group competition formed based around the Murrumbidgee Valley. This was not sanctioned by the NSW Rugby League.
George moved on to the NSW southern highlands town of Mittagong in 1967 and spent four seasons playing for the Mittagong Lions.
Wests had been looking for a good Country front row prospect for some time. Former Wests player and now official, Harry Fyvie had seen George play and convinced the Wests Committee to go down to Mittagong and see George play. They liked what they saw.
