Geoff Smith grew up in the Sydney suburb of Concord. He was educated at Ashfield Boys High School. Ashfield High produced a number of very good rugby league players that went on and had successful grade careers.
He played junior rugby league with a number of clubs including Concord United and Croydon Park United. As he reached his late teens he played with the Shamrocks who were supported by Ruby’s Oriental Hotel at Concord. He also had a season with the Burwood United under 21’s.
