Gary Walsh grew up in the western Sydney suburb of Regents Park. He first played rugby league with the Regents Park club in the Canterbury Bankstown junior rugby league competition. By 1965 many of the Regents Park players moved across to the newly formed Berala Bears club in Wests territory. Berala became the source of many fine footballers that went on to play grade with Wests.

Gary’s younger brother, Peter Walsh also played for Berala and like Gary would go on to play First Grade with Wests.
