Fred Large was born in the south west NSW town of Junee. His father had interests in various gold mines but, like many, as the gold ran out they drifted towards the cities. The Large family located to the suburb of Newtown where Fred was first recorded playing rugby union.
He later moved to Ashfield where he undertook his occupation as a Boot Maker. It was while residing here that he qualified to play rugby league with Wests in 1913.
