Frank

Frank Sponberg’s birth was registered at Hurstville, NSW in 1912 under the name of Spongberg. He was born about the time that his family moved from Balmain to the Sydney suburb of Lakemba.

The Sponberg family was originally from Millers Point at the base of what is now the Sydney Harbor Bridge. In those days Millers Point housed workers for the nearby wharves.

It is likely that Frank’s family eventually moved to the Balmain area to undertake similar work on the Balmain wharves.

Franks father and uncles played rugby union in the Millers Point area and were recorded with the Gipps Electorate team and the Sydney Rugby Union Club which formed as an offshoot of the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Union Club.
