R. McMillan is not related to Frank “Skinny” McMillan and is not Frank’s older brother, Cyril Roy McMillan. Frank’s brother was recorded as R. (Roy) McMillan when he played in the early 1920’s. Roy was a returned serviceman and former prisoner of war, who served in the First World War.
By the early 1930’s Roy McMillan would have been too old to have played with Wests. A comparison of photographs confirms that Roy McMillan was not the Wests player from the 1930’s.
The question then was who was R McMillan who played with Wests in 1931 and 1932? A search was undertaken to try and build a playing profile for R McMillan.
There was some difficulty as young men moved around extensively in the early 1930’s searching for work, as a result of the Great Depression. News reports also are sometimes inaccurate, and in the case of R McMillan, these factors came into consideration.
With all available information, it is concluded that this player was Donald McMillan who lived at Enfield.
