Denis

Wests Archive would like to acknowledge the assistance of Denis’s son, Greg Laverty, in providing additional information about his father’s rugby league career.

Denis Laverty was born in 1943 at Nowra on the NSW South Coast. It was here that he learned and developed his rugby league skills with the Nowra Warriors Club.

Nowra has had a long and proud history of playing rugby league going back to 1913. Former Wests player Eph Mison was instrumental in establishing the game there.

The district has produced many fine players and Denis Laverty was one of these South Coast products. Long time Wests official, Rick Wayde recalls Denis being a sturdy type of outside back in the Johnny King mould.
