Chris Wellman grew up at Engadine in the Sutherland Shire. He was recorded playing junior rugby league with the Sutherland club before being graded with Cronulla-Sutherland.
He played six seasons with Cronulla and showed his versatility playing both in the backs and forwards. From 1975 onward he travelled around playing rugby league in NSW, Queensland and England.
Chris was rated by many as an extremely good footballer who was unlucky not to be recognised for higher representative honours.
