Charles

Identifying player #106 led back to the St George District. A check of records indicated that there were two Charles Thackerays in this district, one being far too old to have played football in the relevant period.

Charles Thackeray identified as player #106 was a resident of Rockdale. He played his junior football with local clubs before moving up into the Grade ranks with the Western Suburbs Third Grade team. This team was based in the St George District in 1911.

Charles played only one First Grade game with Wests and that was in round three of 1912 when he partnered Albert Conlin in the centres.

However Charles Thackeray’s life story had only just commenced. He was soon thrust into the turmoil of the Great War. His bravery earned him the coveted Military Medal
