Arthur Collinson grew up in the Newcastle suburb of Stockton. He played his junior rugby league for Stockton and North Newcastle. He first came to prominence when he was selected for the Newcastle under 20’s team in 1948.
Future Wests players Dev Dines and Jack Mantle were selected in the under eighteen squad that year, while Brian Carlson played in the under seventeen team.
In 1949, at age 19, Arthur Collinson was promoted to the North Newcastle First Grade team. He quickly developed, being selected as a Reserve for Newcastle in a Country rugby league elimination match against Combined Northern Districts.
He was recognised by the North Newcastle Club that year by taking out the Club’s most improved player award.
