Albert Johnston was born and grew up in Balmain, NSW. He played rugby union with the Balmain Rugby Union Club in 1911.
He made an immediate impact in the union code, and was selected to play in a Metropolitan team in the same year. However, towards the end of the 1911 season Albert switched across to the Balmain Rugby League team.
Albert made his debut in First Grade in round eleven and played the last four rounds of the competition in First Grade. Balmain took out the wooden spoon in 1911. The team had only one win up to the point when Albert played. Balmain won two of its final four matches with Albert Johnston at halfback.
