Stanley

Wests player #90 is recorded in the Western Suburbs First Grade Heritage Players list and the Rugby League Project as S B Wall.

He was recorded as S B Wall in newspapers of the time playing mostly at fullback for both Wests Rugby Union and Wests Rugby League teams.

However there was no S B Wall in NSW Births, Deaths, and Marriages. There was one marriage record of a Stanley B Wall at Katoomba in 1917. Katoomba is a long way from Ashfield so no immediate connection was made.

There was a Stanley Wall, born at Windsor, NSW, with parents James and Edna Wall. Again, Windsor is quite distant to Ashfield.

Ancestry records found this family, with S B Wall appearing as Stanley Bligh Wall. Stanley’s birth registration did not include a second name. However, he appeared to have adopted his father’s second name of ‘Bligh’.

While Stanley Bligh Wall appeared to be the right person, there was no immediate connection with rugby league or a residential location close to the heart of West’s territory.

A search of Trove revealed quite a story and unraveled the mystery of Stanley Bligh Wall. The Windsor and Richmond Gazette proved to be a significant source of information.
