In the words of Chairman, Jim Marsden, 1998 was a ‘disastrous’ year. Only four wins on the board left the club reeling. The players recruited or promoted after the 1997 culling weren’t able to produce the goods, although the extensive injury list was certainly a factor. Harvey Howard, Brenton Pomeroy, Paul Langmack, Andrew Leeds and John Skandalis all spent long periods on the sidelines and there simply weren’t the reserves to replace players of that calibre. They certainly missed the forward power of Harvey Howard, who had returned to England. Imports Leo Dynevor (Newcastle), Darren Fritz (Norths) and Darren Rameka (St George) were three players, however, that did make significant contributions. Of the many juniors forced up into First Grade, Tommy’s son Lincoln Raudonikis, made a good debut. All in all, 36 players were used in First Grade, so it was not surprising that continuity was a problem. The poor performance meant that recruiting for 1999 was extremely difficult.

Tom Raudonikis retained his position as NSW State of Origin Coach, while Ken McGuinness played in two of the three matches. Adrian Rainey made the remarkable journey from Jersey Flegg to First Grade and was predictably named the “Rookie of the Year”. Steve Georgallis was named “Clubman of the Year” while Brett Hodgson enhanced his reputation as a top tier player. He and Kevin McGuinness were equal top try-scorers with 10 each.

Paul Langmack announced his retirement at the end of the season after eight dedicated years at the club. His professionalism and leadership had been an inspiration for younger players. He would be sorely missed.
